The citation I worked on is from the movie Matrix from the Wachowski sisters. (Minute 33:00)
It shows a container for a single person (Neo), to log into another reality multiplied for the whole human race and arranged on infrastructure lines. It sustains the whole body and creates a special situation of the body in one reality and the mind living in another reality, which gives information to the wired body. Into the blue is a redesign of this capsule as a living environment for 6 people multiplied as a concept for the whole city. The Matrix capsule houses a single person and is fixed to an infrastructure distribution tower. These Power plants inhabit in the movie 1218,5 persons per sqkm. There are 7 milliard persons on the world. To stack all persons in power plants it needs 793.650 towers which are occupying almost 6 milliard sqm - an area almost as big as Australia (7.617.930.000). The exospine is the reduction of this capsule. It is supporting the body in a specific position and allows the user to enter another reality by blowing up a protective skin to shelter the vulnerable body.
The log-in to another reality plays in “into the blue” an important part in the everyday live. It became as important as eating, sleeping and cooking. The inhabitants I am dealing with have one important differentiator- the time they are logged in another reality. There is the three persons long term shell, for inhabitants staying several years. There are two travelers, who are staying 2 weeks and a gamer, who just stays one hour. The by passer is a 10 minutes user. The interface between the realities is the body. The shell is a docking station to connect the body and to sustain it either by tubes and synthetic alimentation or by just including the technical elements like a compressed toilet. The interface one wears is a portable furniture or exoskeleton. The inhabitants search a specific empty shell, like a crab on a search for a new home, and connect themselves via their portable furniture to it. The shells have two elements: one solid element, where other function are included and the membrane outside the tube, where one enters into the other reality. This membrane is processional, transformable and changeable by the wish and the thoughts of the user. The top left concept model analyzes the geometry of a capsule protecting the body and sustaining it simultaneously. The bottom left sketch model studies multiple spatial situations of being under, over or in between a skin layer.
